5 Free Sets of Sexy Social Media Icons For Your Blog

Whether you maintain a blog as a way to market your freelance writing services, as a way to maintain an author presence, or as its own business model, tying your blog to your larger social media presence is vital.

That includes giving blog readers the opportunity to share your posts on their favorite social networks. And it involves telling readers how they can connect with you in other ways.

One way to do both of those things is to feature social media icons somewhere on your blog. Using this site as an example, you'll find social media icons below each post. Those icons allow users to share the posts with others. If you look to the sidebar of the site (near the top), you'll see a separate set of social media icons. Those icons let you know how you can connect with me directly.

If you haven't added social media icons to your own blog yet, why not do it now? Here are five of my favorite free sets of social media icons that can get you started.

*Please make sure you check the license terms for these icons before using them to make sure they're appropriate for your particular blog.

Hexagon Social Media Icons on Deviant Art

This is one sexy set of social media icons for sure. They're clean. They're effective. And yet they offer that little something extra by moving away from the typical round or square icon shapes. It gives them just enough extra oomph to really stand out.

Round Social Media Icons from GraphicsFuel.com

This set of social media icons is clearly a favorite of mine. It's the set I use here in our sidebar to highlight my own social media profiles. I love the basic simplicity of the round icons. But the clean modern edge of the border is what makes them pop for me. That lets these icons carry over well to pretty much any background your blog might use.

  1. Oh, I like these. I tend to pick a share plugin and stick with it. I use Social Media Widget by Blink Web Effects in my sidebar and the Share This plugin on my posts.

This makes me want to go play with my sites.

    • I just use a plugin for the sharing buttons at the bottom of posts here. But even then, you can customize by swapping the plugin image files for a different icon set (just make sure you use the same file names). That gives you the functionality of your favorite plugin, but with a more custom design (for those comfortable playing with those things — you’d have to manually deal with plugin updates if you do that).

  2. Thanks for the links!

I’ve been reading about how social media icons are moving towards a ‘flat’ design. Meaning: no flashiness, just a basic design. Why? Because internet users are familiar with the icons of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, etc. There’s no need to design icons that are cutesy, flashy or artsy. • Thanks for the extra resource Amandah. I think as long as the designs aren’t so complex that they hurt the logo recognition, they’re fine. Flat designs like that example are great in that they can be used on pretty much any blog design. And they seem to be popular with social media plugins so you don’t have to choose your own look. As a reader, my only concern about any social media icons would be consistency. I like to see them all in one place, and I like it to be obvious what I’m clicking. When a blogger uses custom buttons or widgets for each network, or they have them spread out with some above the post and some below, that drives me crazy. The only thing worse is when they forget to put the options in there at all. I’m always surprised by how many blogs still lack basic buttons to let people share their content.
