How to Write Business Plans

Have you ever created a business plan? If so, you know how difficult it can be. In fact, I personally believe that these are among the most difficult freelance writing projects. That being said, you don’t want to pass these gigs by if they interest you and you have the experience to deliver. As strange as it may sound, there are many organizations that hire out the task of writing a business plan.

If you are interested in this type of project, you must consider the following details:

  1. You will be working very closely with your client. Simply put, this is the only way to ensure that the business plan is accurate and complete. After all, you don’t really know the ins and outs of your client’s company. You will be in charge of the overall writing and creation of the plan, but along the way expect a lot of input. Don’t fight this as it is part of the process.
  2. Some are long, some are short. This is something that you need to check on with the client before quoting a price and getting started. I have created business plans ranging from one page to 20 or more. Some companies only want to include a mission statement, some financial goals, and other basic details. Others expect charts and graphs, projections, and long, drawn out content that touches on every last detail. Obviously, the more involved the plan the more money you should earn.
  3. Who is the business plan for? It goes without saying that your client is the one who needs the business plan. But do they want it for themselves? Or are they going to use it for another reason such as for funding or to show a partner or client? How the business plan is being used will determine the tone you take, the information you include, and how it is presented.

It is more difficult to explain business plan writing than any other kind. The reason for this is that each and every plan is so different. While you may be thinking this isn’t for you, remember that your client will be with you every step of the way. I have found business plan writing to be fun for this exact reason. The project is unique, you get to interact one-on-one with the client, and the pay is exceptional.
