Network through Connections with Editors

Over the past five years I have worked with 100+ editors. Some work for large national publications, and others “wear many hats” for smaller operations. While every relationship is unique, one thing always remains the same: these are great connections to have.

Time and time again I land new gigs based on a referral given by an editor in my network. Sometimes they pass contact information along to me. Other times the editor will send my name to industry friends and those people eventually contact me directly.

Is it okay to ask an editor to pass your name along? Most definitely, but don’t be pushy. Let them know you are looking to expand into other publications, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Don’t underestimate how many connections your editors have in the publishing industry.

My experience shows that magazine editors often times jump from publication to publication. This is not true with all of them, but is definitely something to keep in mind. For this reason, make sure you have the personal contact information for any editor that you have worked with. This way, if they decide to move on you can get back in touch and hopefully land a writing gig with their new company.

I greatly value my relationship with every editor. In fact, I have become close friends with many of them. No matter how many connections you have, always keep one thing in mind: one relationship can lead to another, and so on and so forth.
