Find Writing Motivation by Going Back to Basics [Podcast]

All Freelance Writing Podcast Episode 18 - Writing Motivation

I'm a bit late in sharing this, but last week's podcast episode on writing motivation is now up. This one is the first solo episode after the re-launch.

Dann Alexander (DannAlexander.com) and I were chatting on Twitter about show ideas. He suggested going back to basics as a way of staying motivated to write. He specifically brought up the idea of writing by hand rather than typing. You can read Dann's own post about long-hand writing on his website linked above (or from the show notes page). I took the show from there with some other suggestions.

Writing Motivation Tips Covered in the Podcast

Some of the things touched on in this episode include:

  • Writing by hand when you want to focus and connect with a writing project in a new way;
  • Minimizing distractions;
  • Writing environments, and how changing your environment can motivate and inspire;
  • The importance of letting your mind wander freely once in a while;
  • How a writing buddy or critique partner can improve writing motivation;
  • How rewards can play into writing motivation.

You can listen to the episode below or check out the show notes page for more information and related links. (If you're reading this post through your email subscription, you can listen to the episode by visiting the show notes page linked here.)

This episode ran a bit shorter than anticipated after edits (not quite the 30 minute minimum target), but our next community question episode (also stemming from my conversation with Dann) will be longer. You can expect that next week, on the topic of social media dos and don'ts when building your personal brand as a freelance writer.

This week's episode will release on Friday. I'll be joined by Princess Jones to talk about fear and confidence issues writers face. Remember you can preview two advance clips from that episode before its release.
